The earliest history is a bit of a slog but worth it. By the end, I felt I had a better appreciation for the divisions which lead to the breakup of Yugoslavia, which were not entirely religious (as I initially thought). The book also has very interesting maps of ancient Croatia and how the county/region evolved over time.|||In this concise volume, Curtis does an admirable job of condensing the lengthy and complex history of Croatia, from Roman times to the present-day debates over whether the country should join the European Union. --Library Journal
